Quasi-biennial oscillations extracted from the monthly NAO index and temperature records are phase-synchronized

چکیده
Using the extension of Monte Carlo Singular System Analysis (MC SSA), based on evaluating and testing the regularity of the dynamics of the SSA modes against the colored noise null hypothesis, we demonstrate detection of oscillatory modes with period of about 27 months in records of monthly average near-surface air temperature from several European locations, as well as in the monthly North Atlantic Oscillation index. According to their period, the detected modes can be attributed to the quasi-biennial oscillations (QBO). The QBO modes extracted from the temperature and from the NAO index underwent synchronization analysis and their phase synchronization has been confirmed with high statistical significance.

Enhanced Monte Carlo Singular System Analysis and detection of period 7.8 years oscillatory modes in the monthly NAO index and temperature records
An extension of the Monte Carlo Singular System Analysis (MC SSA) is described, based on evaluating and testing regularity of dynamics of the SSA modes against the colored noise null hypothesis, in addition to the test based on variance (eigenvalues). The application of the regularity index, computed from a coarse-grained estimation of mutual information, enhances the test sensitivity and relia...
متن کاملQuasi-biennial corn yield cycles in Iowa
Quasi-biennial cycles are often reported in climate studies. The interannual El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) are two phenomena containing quasi-periodicities of approximately 2.5 and 2.2 years. It is known that ENSO affects corn yield throughweather patterns, NAO affects surface temperature and cloudiness, and surface temperature, rainfall, and radiation...
متن کاملبررسی روابط شاخص نوسان جنوبی و دمای سطح آب اقیانوسهای آرام و هند با بارش فصلی و ماهانه ایران
Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and Sea Surface Temperature (SST) patterns affect rainfall in many parts of the world. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between monthly and seasonal rainfall of Iran versus SOI and Pacific and Indian sea surface temperature. Monthly rainfall data, from 50 synoptic stations with at least 30 years of records up to the end of 2007, were used. Monthl...
متن کاملMulti-scale dynamical analysis (MSDA) of sea level records versus PDO, AMO, and NAO indexes
Herein I propose a multi-scale dynamical analysis to facilitate the physical interpretation of tide gauge records. The technique uses graphical diagrams. It is applied to six secular-long tide gauge records representative of the world oceans: Sydney, Pacific coast of Australia; Fremantle, Indian Ocean coast of Australia; New York City, Atlantic coast of USA; Honolulu, US state of Hawaii; San Di...

Dominant spatio-temporal patterns of joint sea surface temperature (SST) and sea level pressure (SLP) variability in the Atlantic Ocean are identified using a multivariate frequency domain analysis. Five significant frequency-bands a r e isolated ranging from the quasi-biennial to the quasi-decadal. Two quasi-biennial bands are centered around 2.2 and 2.7-year periods; two interannual bands a r...
